Krankn design tips for commercial printing...

1. Preferred Formats

  • Adobe Illustrator
with all type to converted to outlines
    (CMYK only)

  • Adobe Indesign
with all type to converted to outlines
    (CMYK only)

  • Adobe PDF
It must setup as Press Quality
    (Page 1 = front, Page 2 = back)
    (CMYK only)
  • Adobe Photoshop -
    300 DPI minium, CMYK only
    with all type flatened

  • We also accept Microsoft Publisher, Word files, Power Point. These programs are not the best design program but we can convert these to a suitable format. As long as the photo and images are 300dpi or larger.

2. Bleed Area

  • Always add minimum 3mm bleed to each side of the print job - when you require images, photos and solid colour blocks to run to the edge of the page.
  • Text, logos that you do not want "chopped off" should be inside the margin area. e.g. min 3mm from the edge of trim size outside edge.

Why add bleed? A bleed area is a Printed area which extends outside the trimmed area. It is not possible to print all the way to the edge of the paper sheet. To achieve this effect it is necessary to print a larger area than is required and then trim the paper down.

3. Photos and Illustrations

  • Photos and solid colours used in the background need to be placed to the outside edge of the bleed area.
  • Make sure images and colours are minium of 300dpi
  • Set up as CMYK not RGB. RGB colours do not print well on commercial printers. Most images you find on the web are RGB and only 72DPI so they are not suitable for commercial printing.
  • Digital Camera Photos - should be taken at highest resolution possible. Images taken with low quality digital camera may not be suitable for print. e.g. mobile phone cameras and camera less than 3 Mega Pixels. Most digital cameras produce RGB images so they need to be converted to CMYK. Photo files should be saved as TIFF or RAW format for best results.
  • Photos should be scanned at 300 dpi or higher for optimum resolution. Scanned files should be saved as TIFF format for best results. Do not scan photos from books as you will get unsatisfactory results. Plus this infringes copyright.
  • If you need a photo please ask. We may be able to find a suitable image for your purpose. (Fees for this will apply)

4. Fonts

  • All fonts are either embedded, converted to curves, rasterised or please supplied fonts used with the graphic files you send to us.

5. Good Colours

  • Use colours from a CMYK swatch.
  • To obtain a deep, dark black add mix 50% Cyan, to the 100% black in colour setup.
  • Ensure there are no pantone Spot colours chosen. All our printing is CMYK and if you use spot colours this may unsatisfactory results. Pantone spot colours should be conversed to CYMK.

6. INTERNAL BORDERS

  • We do not recomend Internal borders. Our trimming tolerance is +/- 2mm, so if your internal borders are set at 2mm, you may end up with a border which is 3mm at one side and 1mm at the other.

6. INK SATURATION

  • Be very mindful of not using to much ink coverage. As a rule never use more then 300 % ink coverage.
  • The more saturated the colours the more difficult it is to dry, trim, fold etc and could cause scuffing or set off

7. Templates

  • If you need a template for Stationery items, postcards, flyers, folders, stickers, magnets or anything else. Please let us know what program you need it for and we will email it to you.
