Spot UV Varnish is applied to chosen spots (areas), of a printed piece. This has the affect of highlighting and drawing attention to that part of the design, but it also provides the additional visual stimulus of having varied textures on a single printed surface. This adds a lot of interest, and can identify the printing as a premium card in the perception of the reader.

One very effective technique is to apply a UV gloss spot varnish on top of matt laminated printing. This achieves maximum contrast between the highly reflective shiny UV coating and the light-absorbing matt laminate, and can, for instance, create a striking first impression.

Handy Hints for Foiling and spot UV cards:

Do not use Photoshop black it will be oversaturated and not print well. Please Use k100 for text and C30 M30 Y30 k100 for a nice black in background.
Foiling can not be applied on top of spot UV or spot UV on top of foil. A good gap needs to be left to allow for foiling when using spot UV.
When foiling cards we need 5mm distance from the edges on the left hand, on the right hand, and the top end. There should be 1cm distance from the bottom end.
Foiling should be a minium of 1 pt - fine detail will not work.
Finish artwork in illustrator. eg place photos into illustrator from Photoshop (please embed) and do type in illustrator. Set Spot UV areas as k100 on the illustrator template.
File best supplied in illustrator with type converted to outlines.
All images should be 300 dpi minimum.
Always keep type and important elements 3mm from the edge of the card. When you want a background photographic image or graphic element to the edge of the card - it needs to have bleed added to all sides. This allows for movement when trimmed.
Do not use boarders on the edge of the card. As they will not look good when the card moves slightly during printing and cutting.
